Our history

Charlie Beiggs Restaurant has been a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike since 1988. The restaurant is housed in a historic brick building built in 1934 and served as the North Windham Fire Station. The evidence is still visible as the french doors at the front of the building were the original doors for the fire trucks.  The Firehouse Tavern, located in the restaurant, displays many pictures of those who served in this fire station as well as other fires houses and local memorabilia.

In the late 1970's, a local businessman, Fred Rozzi, remodeled the building into a restaurant known as "Rozzi's Fire Barn." Many long time locals will remember the popular eatery.

The next chapter in the history book involves the appearance of "Horsefeathers" on the scene. Horsefeathers Restaurant had a location in Portland, Me. and No. Conway, NH. The owners bought Rozzi's Fire Barn and for a short time, the business was known as Horsefeathers at the Crossing. Brian Stevens was the manager of this location and eventually he and his wife Laura bought the business. In 1988, they remodeled the building once again and opened under the name "Charlie Beiggs." (And for those folks who still call and ask to speak to Charlie........rumor has it he was someone Brian knew in the service.)

Peggy Rowe and Irene Discatio became the owners of Charlie Beiggs after Brian and Laura moved on to other adventures.  Their history with the restaurant was extensive, having worked for a number of years at Charlie Beiggs prior to taking over the restaurant.  After eight years at the helm, Peggy and Irene handed over the reins to Tony Barner and Clare Amrhein, a husband and wife team, who fell in love with the area and the people.

Tony and Clare relocated to southern Maine after living all over the country.  The “feel” of the restaurant, the clientele, the caliber of the staff, and the quality of the food – coupled with its history in the community – made it an easy move for the couple.  Their philosophy is that every day, you are welcomed to their home for a wonderful meal and you won’t leave disappointed.

The tradition of Charlie Beiggs continues!
